Cosmos: Tangerine Dream - Εικόνα

On Monday, March 11, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is welcoming at Stavros Niarchos Hall one of the most influential bands of the electronic scene, whose sound has formed the basis of electronic music since the mid-80s.

Edgar Froese founded Tangerine Dream in Berlin in 1967, and managed to keep the pioneering band alive and kicking through multiple lineups and stylistic changes: from the almost otherworldly soundscapes and hypnotic synthesizers of the 1970s to the dreamy synth-pop melodies and cinematic soundtracks of the ’80s (Thief, Risky Business, Legend), Tangerine Dream have always been at the forefront of electronic music innovation.

The work of Tangerine Dream was largely parallel to that of Kraftwerk, and the two probably influenced each other. Yet, Tangerine Dream may boast that they composed ambient music long before Brian Eno, they were one of Giorgio Moroder’s chief influences, and their impact on new age, trance and EDM music remains incalculable.

The one and only time that Tangerine Dream performed live in Greece was in 1983, at Lycabettus Theatre. Forty years later, they return for a live concert in Athens, without their founder, Froese, who passed away in 2015, but fronted by Thorsten Quaeschning, whom Froese himself appointed as his successor.

Quaeschning will be accompanied by violinist Hoshiko Yamane and pianist and organist Paul Frick, presenting both their latest album, Raum, and tracks from their discography which amounts to more than 100 releases.
