In this series of workshops, participants will discover the excitement and power of composition as a way to create striking collages, while also experimenting with a variety of drawing and painting materials, highlighting the expressive properties of color.
Collage is one of the most powerful narrative techniques. A wide-ranging tool that combines references and links to culture, context and place. It glues together fragments of images, sketches, patterns, materials and textures. The purpose of the “Drawing in Layers” workshops is to provoke reflection on how we put together works of art, both visually and haptically, and how setting our imagination free can influence and inspire the creation of multi-layered works, thoughts and ideas.
Workshop 1: Narrative collage / Cut out the game A narrative collage in the form of a game, inspired by the works of the Dada movement. Using an array of magazines and newspapers as a starting point (tabloids, advertisements, specialty magazines, etc.), participants in this workshop will research the different roles of photographs and shapes, creating new narratives.
Workshop 2: Photomontage With photography as our primary medium, we are searching for new perspectives in everything that a photo lens can capture, repositioning the photos into new sceneries, and turning the image into a puzzle game, using drawings and texts as complementary tools.
Workshop 3: Weaving the past In this workshop we are experimenting with embroidery on top of photography, two materials that are so different from each other but their combination creates new layers of reading a story.
Workshop 4: Assemblage/ Going into the Third Dimension The assemblage technique is seen as the evolution of collage, by assembling objects in a limited space, going out into the third dimension, while inviting the creator and viewer to see the works around them.
In the "Assemblage/ Going to the Third Dimension" workshop, drawing inspiration from works by Joseph Cornell, Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, participants will have the opportunity to use two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials, organic or artificial, from recycling, from second-hand shops or from their personal collection, scraps of wood, children's toys, fabrics, paper, buttons, doorknobs, keys, objects without a meaningful sequence but with a noticeable intention to create associations.
For the needs of the workshop, participants are invited to bring any materials, two-dimensional or three-dimensional, that they would like to use for the construction of the project.
