A Template of Future Hospitals by Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW)

In 2017, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) embarked on a project, following a shared vision, to create the hospital of the future and deliver three of them to the Greek National Health System as part of the international SNF Health Initiative. The SNF General Hospitals of Komotini and Sparta and the SNF University Pediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki will be state-of-the-art public hospitals located in underserved areas on the periphery of the health care system in Greece that will provide equitable, quality medical care for all. Scheduled for delivery in 2025, the three hospitals seek to set a new standard in public health care in Greece and beyond.

The hospital of the future is one that is designed, built, and operated in a way that puts people at the center. It offers an environment where providers of care can deliver their very best, instilling pride, serenity, and resilience in a workplace that is demanding by nature. At the same time, the hospital of the future gives dignity and comfort to patients of all ages by recognizing the need for individualized care and privacy, while also making room for a compassionate community to grow. This approach permeates SNF’s participatory approach to the design of the hospitals’ infrastructure and clinical programming, which are the result of extensive consultation and continuous dialogue with the medical communities, hospital staff, and local residents who are the stakeholders for each hospital.

Design of the hospitals centers on three core values: the importance of nature and its therapeutic power, environmental sustainability aiming to reduce the hospitals’ carbon footprint and prepare for a zero-emission future, and medical excellence paired with holistic patient-centric care.

The exhibition “A Template of Future Hospitals” will include architectural models, elevation drawings, and plans, as well as 3D renderings of the three hospitals.
