Reflections on an Ancient Line of Verse: Elytis and Sappho - Εικόνα

Our second 2019 lecture focuses on Elytis’ poems: “Of the Moon of Mytilene – Old and New Ode” and “Past Midnight.”

In his essays, Elytis repeatedly acknowledges his debt to Sappho, the poet who celebrated love in her timeless verse, in the profound conviction that by writing, one “achieves immortality.” Informing Elytis’ poetry, too, these same topics are often evoked by quoting Sappho’s poems, or introducing assimilated memories from the beaches of Lesbos and the moon of Sappho.
