The National Library of Greece, in collaboration with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, present the retrospective exhibition of the artist, Eleni Stathopoulou.

Eleni Stathopoulou (1914-2016) was born and raised in Athens. She studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Having been in a relationship with the sculptor Memos Makris since their student years, she followed him to Paris is 1945, as one of the passengers of the now-legendary RMS Mataroa. Upon returning to Greece, in 1949, the painter joined the innovative art collective “Armos”. During the early post-war decades, Stathopoulou contributed, through her work, to the shift of contemporary Greek art towards abstraction, and to a more direct connection between Greek visual artists and the international avant-garde. She also taught extensively, having worked at the Papastratios School of Interior Design for several years.

The exhibition organized by the National Library of Greece, in collaboration with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, is the first retrospective showing of the painter’s work, representing an effort to make her work more widely known. It will include approximately 150 paintings from the entire spectrum of her work as an artist: from her student years and the German Occupation, from her time in Paris (1945-1949) and, subsequently, from her Aegean landscape period to her shift towards abstract art. The exhibition ends with her monumental abstract compositions, created in the 1980s, to give a fully rounded overview of her work as an artist for the very first time.
