Prompted by Jannis Psychopedis’ exhibition currently on view at the SNFCC, our series of lectures focusing on major Greek poets and their work through the eyes of a different distinguished speaker each month draws to a close.
Michalis Chryssanthopoulos on Andreas Embiricos
Michalis Chryssanthopoulos examines the poetics of Andreas Embiricos, highlighting two distinct paths evident in his work already in the 1930s: the practice of automatic writing employed in his poetry collection Blast Furnace, a landmark in Greek surrealist poetry, and the poetics of desire, based on the psychoanalytic theory.
We will trace the evolution of these two components in a work produced by the poet over four decades and published gradually, many years after his death. In this context, the utopian project of a subversive and at the same time sensuous writing style clearly emerges, masterfully conveyed in Andreas Embiricos’ poetry.
