Inspired by Daphne du Maurier’s short-story written in 1952, Hitchcock directed a precursor of the disaster films that became a Hollywood phenomenon in the 1970s; the main protagonist is Nature’s revenge against humankind (which is left unexplained in Hitchcock’s film). A seductive woman with a pro-active approach to flirting pursues a man to his hometown in northern California. Strange events ensue, with swarms of aggressive birds attacking the local inhabitants. Hitchcock builds suspense with subjective shots in which all kinds of winged assailants come down from the sky, adding a strong psychological undercurrent and hints about the balance of his characters’ sexual relationships. The film was nominated for a Visual Effects Oscar.
