Featuring six musicians and a singer, the Voyage Jazz Group, fronted by percussionist Alex Christidis, brings sacred jazz music to the Lighthouse.
Their program features excerpts of Duke Ellington’s magnificent, rarely performed Sacred Concerts, as well as a selection of works by other composers. When jazz music emerged in the early 20th century in the United States, it was characterized by freedom and modernity, causing it to be regarded with suspicion by conservative circles. Yet, not only did jazz eventually go to church, but many jazz compositions became part of worship, and leading jazz musicians composed masterpieces inspired by their relationship to the divine.
