The book thief (2013)
This story follows the tragedy of the Second World War and the atrocities of Hitler’s fascism, from the perspective of Germans who lived during the period. The main heroine is a 12-year-old girl who finds refuge in the world of books, which she steals and shares with other Jews in the basement of her adopted parents. Markus Zusak’s famous bestseller comes alive in the most moving way, in a movie that divided critics, but became a great commercial success, providing John Williams with yet another Oscar nomination for Best Music.

Tamara Drewe (2010)
Tamara returns to the village of her childhood, no longer an ‘ugly duckling’ whom no one would want to remember, but now an incredibly attractive woman who makes every man’s heart skip a beat. The region’s male population is clearly shaken beyond repair, while her old and unsuccessful flings—a ‘nobody’ who had rejected her, and a famous writer who ignored her professionally—will now meet their match! Posy Simmonds’ ‘spicy’ graphic novel transforms into a very entertaining comedy in the hands of Stephen Frears.

Certified Copy (2010)
A middle-aged British writer is in Tuscany for a lecture and to promote his latest book. An attractive French woman, who loves the arts, wishes to meet with him so that they may more privately discuss his work in more depth. Where will this encounter lead? Have the two met before? The penultimate movie by the recently departed Abbas Kiarostami, the most famous director of Iranian cinema, comments on the significance of the authentic versus the copy, if not on reality versus imagination.
