In collaboration with radio producers Black Athena, best known for their shows and DJ sets at well-known music festivals such as Plissken, the SNFCC presents an all-new Culture Jam – a project dedicated to dance music. Culture Jam’s guests relate their experiences from the global and local dance scene through an open discussion with the audience audience, before presenting their work in a DJ set.
This Culture Jam’s guest is music producer and DJ Mala (Mark Lawrence), member of the renowned British group Digital Mystikz (DMZ). DMZ’s founding duo, Mala and Coki, played an important role in the revival of the London dubstep scene. They gained international recognition when their song Anti War Dub was featured in the soundtrack of Children of Men in 2006.
Five years later, Mala traveled to Cuba together with producer Gilles Peterson and began working on a new album titled Mala in Cuba, released in September 2012. Inspired by Peterson’s love of Cuban music, Mala created an unlikely combination, mixing traditional melodies with the Sound System culture in a musical and anthropological journey, which unites two seemingly incompatible genres.
