Freedom... of Verse - Εικόνα

Every year, on every national day, during parades, or at medal ceremonies in the Olympics, we hear and sing our national anthem. A song that is well known to us all and sends shivers of emotion up and down our spine. But what is this song? Who wrote it and what is the meaning of its lyrics? A story that started in Zakynthos, was printed in Missolonghi, and was later set to music in Corfu.

The activity “Freedom of... Verse” is part of the National Library of Greece’s educational program titled “Issue Number [1821]” and was created to mark the occasion of the Greek Revolution bicentennial. The purpose of the activity is to bring participants into contact with the life and work of Dionysios Solomos and Nikolaos Mantzaros, to raise their awareness of poetry, and to allow them to express themselves through poetry and visual arts.

Upon completion of the activity, participants can browse through the exhibition “The Printing Houses of the Greek Revolution” in the 4th floor atrium of the National Library at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, where Dionysios Solomos’s “Hymn to Liberty” is kept. The document belongs to the National Library of Greece’s Special Collections and dates from 1825.
