In cooperation with WIFT.GR (Women in Film and Television), we present the film LISTEN, written and directed by Maria Douza. A motion picture about communication and the need to belong. At the heart of the story is the deaf teenager Valmira, who is forced to leave the School for the Deaf she is attending in Athens to return to the island where her father lives. There she finds herself facing the risk of indifference and isolation, not only because of small-town biases, but also — especially — because of her own.
Set on a winter island, the film traces the suffering and adventures of people, young and old, who find it difficult to understand and accept one another. It is thus a reflection on the loneliness and isolation that arise from our weakness, fear and resistance to communicate with others. Valmira's deafness functions as a metaphor for both our need to listen and our choice not to, our desire to be understood and our unwillingness to understand. Selfishness can take on many forms; the antidote to it is compassion and kindness, which define our humanity.
The film premiered at the 63rd Thessaloniki International Film Festival, and has participated in several international festivals.
The screening will be followed by a discussion:Maria Douza - Film Director Efthalia Papacosta - Actor Moderator: Olga Malea, Film Director, Member of the Board of WIFT (Women in Film and Television) GR
