Saturday 01 April 2023 21:00
A script-in-hand performance of Lucy Kirkwood’s Maryland at WOW Athens 2023.
Kirkwood’s play is an immediate, extraordinary, communal rallying cry in response to the normalising of horrific actions being committed against all women.
"This play was for many years a private conversation with myself," says Kirkwood. "I hesitate to even call it a play when it is simply a howl, a way of expressing what I feel about a culture of violence against women, but I am sharing it because I wonder if it might express a little of what other people feel about it too."
Maryland was first performed at the Royal Court Theatre over three weeks with a rolling cast of 50 actors and has been made available for people to stage their own readings around the country.
The play is translated by Alexandra K* and directed by Katerina Giannopoulou.
Cast: Aulona Lupa, Gogo Papaioannou, Vasilis Safos, Nancy Sideri, Lydia Tzanoudaki
After the Stage Reading, there will be a discussion, moderated by Eri Kyrgia, dramaturge-translator, former Artistic Director of the National Theatre.
