2015: Light Up the Night at the Stavros Niarchos Park
In June 2015, and following 3 years of continuous construction work, the SNFCC opened its doors to the public for the first time, presenting 4 days—and nights—of events, entitled “Light Up the Night at the Stavros Niarchos Park”. The almost complete, then, Stavros Niarchos Park welcomed its first guests, in 4 days and nights of events which focused on four main themes (Arts, Sport, Education and Sustainability). Through these axes, the goal was to communicate to the public the philosophy of the SNFCC relating to open access for all citizens, without exception, to a welcoming and open space, where music, theater and the arts will interact with recreation, research, nature and sports.
Over the 4 days and nights of June (21-24/6), the Park received a total of approximately 40,000 visitors, while it hosted events that covered a wide range of fields: music, photography, architecture, sports, the environment, creative workshops and overnight video art screenings, chess, cooking and acrobatics.
The events were attended by Renzo Piano and Garry Kasparov, also accompanied by the 2,000 runners who participated in the night race “SNFCC RUN: Running into the Future”. Furthermore, under the artistic direction of Robert Storr and curators Barbara London, Calliope Minioudaki and Fransesca Pietropaolo, the program was complemented by three nights of non-stop, overnight video screenings entitled “Fireflies in the Night”, which included screenings of some of the most important international video art projects, turning the Park into an outdoor cinema. The program of the approximately 50 events hosted in the Stavros Niarchos Park, was formed with the valuable contribution of dozens of collaborators and friends of the SNFCC from Greece and abroad, who joined forces and combined their creativity with a common purpose: the organization of events aimed to inspire the public, to instil the project’s optimism and to get the public even better acquainted with the SNFCC. Also, to reinforce the importance of the SNFCC as a creative platform, a place for gathering and for exchanging ideas, a place of culture and education, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy a complete “future experience”.
